Poland will host the next round of UN climate talks in 2013.
The
decision to hold the 19th session of the Conference of the Parties
(COP) in Warsaw, capital of Poland, in 2013 was adopted by negotiators
from over 190 countries here in the capital of Qatar, Doha, at the 18th
session of the COP.
Poland
was chosen on the basis of geographical rotation as next year marks the
turn of East European countries to host the annual UN event.
Poland,
which relies on carbon-intensive coal for nearly all its power needs,
has already voiced concern that greater action on climate will harm its
economy.
At
the latest UN climate conference in Doha, negotiators extended the
Kyoto Protocol, the only internationally binding treaty on cutting
emissions of greenhouse gases, to the end of 2020.
The
Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement linked to the United
Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The major feature of the
Kyoto Protocol is that it sets binding targets for 37 industrialised
countries and the European community for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG)
emissions.
